Alexandra Dresel,
M.D. FACS, is both accomplished and talented. She has been in practice at Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital Dallas since 2003. She is very approachable and friendly and her office

Thyroid Surgery
Thyroidectomy:
Dr. Dresel has extensive experience in the surgical treatment of thyroid disease. She
has performed the majority of the thyroid surgery at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital
Dallas for the past several years. She performs approximately 100-125 thyroidectomies every
year.
Thyroid surgery is often indicated for patients with thyroid cancer, large thyroid
nodules and other conditions, which include goiter, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and
Grave's disease. She performs minimally invasive thyroid surgery, which allows most patients
earlier discharge from the hospital (usually the same day as surgery) and earlier return to
work and normal activity. The incision is small, achieving a favorable cosmetic result.
Parathyroid Surgery
Parathyroidectomy:
Dr. Dresel is one of the highest volume parathyroid surgeons in Dallas. She performs over 100 parathyroid operations each year.
The parathyroid glands are responsible for producing parathyroid hormone, which regulates
calcium levels in the blood. People who suffer from hyperparathyroidism usually have a
parathyroid gland that has grown abnormally large. If left untreated, this can lead to
kidney stones, stomach ulcers, decreased bone density, depression and chronic fatigue.
Removal of a parathyroid adenoma is also achieved with a minimally invasive approach.
Most patients are discharged and go home on the same day as their surgery. The incision is small,
achieving a favorable cosmetic result.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Cholecystectomy:
Removal of the gallbladder is one of the most common procedures performed by Dr. Dresel.
Many people have gallstones and may ultimately suffer symptoms as a result of these gallstones.
The gallbladder can be successfully removed with a laparoscope (camera) in the majority of
cases. This is accomplished in the day surgery setting, with rapid return to normal
activities.

Skin Cancer Surgeries
Melanoma:
Malignant melanoma is a type of skin cancer that requires wide excision to minimize
risk of recurrence. The extent of the resection depends on the depth of the melanoma.
Deeper melanomas may also require sampling of the lymph nodes to assess spread. This is
achieved with a procedure called a sentinel lymph node biopsy. This is performed in the
day surgery setting. Dr. Dresel is very experienced with sentinel lymph node biopsy in
the setting of melanoma.
Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinoma:
These types of skin cancer can usually be treated with local excision. This can often be
performed in the office, using local anesthetic.

Lymph Node Biopsy
Lymph nodes can become enlarged for a variety of reasons. These include:infection,
inflammation, reaction to another disease process and cancer. Biopsy (removal) of a
lymph node may be necessary to help determine the reason for the enlarged node(s). This
is usually performed in the day surgery setting.
Soft Tissue Tumors
Lipomas, Sebaceous cysts and other soft tissue tumors can often be removed in the
office, using local anesthesia. Dr. Dresel will evaluate each tumor and discuss whether
this is an option prior to proceeding with any excision.
